Originally created as a series of collages featuring papercuts and found images, these works draw on plant communication and bodhisattva Kuan Yin’s meditation method of ‘returning the listening’ to explore receptivity as a form of primordial intelligence. The title is borrowed from an Octavio Paz poem which speaks beautifully to all of these things.

“… Oí un rumor verdinegro brotar del centro de la noche …”

“I heard a dark green murmur burst from the center of the night: the nim. On it’s shoulders, the sky with all its barbarian jewels. The heat was a huge closing hand, one could hear the roots panting, space expanding, the crumbling of the year. The tree did not yield. Big as a monument to patience, just as the balance that weighs a dewdrop, a grain of light, an instant. Many moons fit in its branches.”

~ Octavio Paz, excerpt from ‘Cuento de dos Jardines’ (‘A Tale of Two Gardens’), 1968. Translated by Eliot Weinberger.
